Witch Hazel

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

By Mary Welty Medicinal Parts: leaves and bark; as distilled Witch Hazel water. Description: Witch hazel is a deciduous shrub or small tree which grows in damp woods from Nova Scotia to Georgia and Nebraska; it is also cultivated elsewhere for its autumn-blooming flowers. Properties and Uses: Astringent, hemostatic, sedative, tonic. Witch hazel leaves and bark have served mostly to make astringent preparations which have been taken internally for diarrhea and used externally as a rinse or gargle for mouth and throat irritations and as a vaginal douche for vaginitis. For skin irritations, bruises, insect bites and stings, minor burns and poison ivy, an ointment made from the fluid extract or a poultice can be applied. A poultice made from the inner bark is said to be effective for hemorrhoids and for eye inflammation. The inner bark also has sedative and hemostatic properties.* Witch Hazel has so many day-to-day uses, that I find it surprising people know so little about it. Today, witch hazel can be purchased at virtually any pharmacy or drug store. Witch hazel is generally found next to the rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. As always, check with your health care professional before administering any type of herbal remedy. That said, A witch hazel compress is excellent for treating bruises, minor scrapes and sprains, and as I learned first hand, for reducing swelling and alleviating the pain associated with inflammation. For years and years (more than I care to recall) I worked as a waitress. Somewhere along the way I managed to bang up my ankle and had a cartilage fragment floating about in there wreaking havoc. After a 7 or 8 hour shift on my feet, my ankle would swell to about twice its normal size. I was popping ibuprofen like candy, and hobbling along like a 90 year-old. After a couple of years of this, I finally started searching for an alternative. Lo and behold, there was the witch hazel. After work, I would soak a compress in witch hazel, lay it across my throbbing ankle and within minutes the pain and swelling would start to subside. Within 20 minutes I could walk normally again with little or no discomfort. In contrast, it would take a minimum of 4 to as many as 6 ibuprofen or buffered aspirin and a minimum of 2 hours before I experienced any relief from the discomfort. For many who suffer adverse reactions to ibuprofen, aspirin, or even Tylenol, this should be welcome news. *The Herb Book, John Lust, Bantam edition, 1974 M.K. What Tools Can Focus Career Management?

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By John Dir There is a great deal of information available from professionals about the importance of taking the steps necessary to accomplish a focused plan for the future of your career. Elements suggested include establishing a good network of personal contacts, developing a winning resume and cover letter, connecting with appropriate recruiter resources, and more. With all the information that a truly effective career search requires, two things become very apparent: 1. Your system of planning should be able to allow you a way to focus the resources and information you will be using to accomplish your success. 2. Your working system for centralizing all this important information should remain intact, easily accessible, and viable for the next time you will need it. Appropriate organization of the information you collect is vital to managing the information in ways that make sense to you. If you are using a computer for launching a job search as if it were a full time task, you are not performing efficiently if you are leaving information all over the place, or even losing its focus between periods of looking for work. Career management should incorporate the flexibility and features of a calendar based personal planning tool to gather, focus and retain all the job search related information needed. This focused approach also helps to inspire the detailed recording of essential intelligence gathered during the interviewing and selecting process, which offers a great refresher resource when used again. After experimenting with various methods for centrally locating preparation, resource, and note management data, you will keep coming back to the multiple advantages of the personal planning format. When tracking date based information, this tool allows tracking of multiple time and date based information. Using this kind of organization, it is possible to plot the entire process from first contact through an offer, which gives an idea of what to expect when the process is repeated. For the non-date oriented material, the computer based system should allow document attachments, address and contact management, association to various views of historical resumes, and the ability to notate what has worked well and not so well in pursuing opportunities. When the process of searching and finding opportunity is complete, you can use the same resource for creating personal action plans for implementing the strategies you bring to the table, and stay on track with other business appointments, events, and activity. There are many potential ways to find yourself out of sync in planning and pursuing career goals while with a company, or between jobs. If you do not manage the information carefully, the task of repeating the process becomes just as difficult as it was the first time you put it together. Managing a career in todays shifting sands of business activity is getting more difficult as the years move forward. If you find yourself between jobs for greater extended periods of time, there are methods you can use to help you fill in these gaps with viable working experience. Simply because you are not paid to perform your duties does not mean you should exclude them from your resume during lapses in time between paying jobs. If you are performing volunteer work, or experimenting with doing business for yourself while job searching, you can fill in the gaps in your resume with projects you have completed which pertain to business skills. Nearly everyone does something worthwhile during periods of unemployment. If you spend all your time moping on the couch, and not engaging in some sort of personal enterprise, you will certainly find the need to explain yourself under a potential employers scrutiny. Your planning approach can include areas of self directed research or performance that you have been engaged with during your off periods. If you do not have an organization to associate your efforts with, you can look for people who will accept your personal consulting in the area of your skills, or work from information about a hobby you often tinker with. You can write articles, teach others, or actually try your hand at a business of your own, starting right where you are. If you carefully manage yourself as an asset worthy of attention, there is no reason to settle for leaving broad periods of time blank on your resume. If you feel like nobody else wants what you have to offer, there is always at least one customer for everything you have learnedyourself! Dating Tool: Confidence 101

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

By Kerr Seth Lordygan Im over it. Theres plenty of fish in the sea, they say. Well, apparently I have been using the wrong bait. Nobody said dating would be easy, but Hollywood sure likes to paint it that way, doesnt it? Theres someone for everyone, they say. Maybe that ought to translate to, Theres someone for everyone.as long as youre a muscled pretty boy with washboard abs, and at least 6 feet tall. So how does one get by this unsettling dating stipulation? Are we actually to believe that love will find us when were not looking? I think people who say that are normally in happy relationships when they say it. Can we buy outer beauty from an online store to match our own inner beauty? Somebody is buying pheromones and weight-loss pills and liposuction and facial restructuring. Hell, now people even get plastic surgery to make them look like a celebrity. Huh??? And you know what? I bet these things work for people. As long as it can build the confidence up in someone, it also strengthens the attraction. So how can we build up that confidence without spending tons of money to people who know how the game works? Sounds like a question for the shrink. I suppose its all part of why I started up a matchmaking service with a friend of mine in Los Angeles. It can be so frustrating out there. And being alone can only make your work day more stressful, it seems. So if I had someone to do the dirty work for me.get me the dating connections, counsel me on why I might not be getting that second date, maybe my frustration level would decrease. So I went into the business.pretty much as a means to find out what can be done to find the perfect one. OK, so nobodys perfect, but at least maybe I can find a decent one who happens to have similar ethics as myself. Oh, and a killer sense of humour is mandatory. But looking around, nobody was going to help me, a fact that made me feel even more alone! So I had to do it myself. Such is life, right? Part of it might be that I feel a need to always be in control of my own destiny. As long as I am actively pursuing something, I am a success. Yea, that sounds right! So I joined forced with my cohort and we started Lets Meet Here. Now Im gonna find the one, right? Wrong! As it seems unethical to date my own clients (damn, I knew Id run into some roadblock!), I figured.at least pass on any information I can gather to those who need it (and baby, we all need it!). Granted, I am learning about all this stuff now. It seems every date and every relationship is completely unique. There is no list of dos and donts that applies. But I do know that going into the business has allowed me an increase in confidence that is apparent in me without my even having to think about it. I am starting to really believe that success comes from the active pursuit of a goal, whether or not the goal is achieved. The process in itself builds characterand character is attractive. So while I learn as I go, I will show as I go too. It is absolutely within my own power to be a success. And the pursuit of achievements is an achievement of its own. However, I have also learned that a little is never enough. And to settle after ones success is no success at all. Maybe now Im fishing with the right bait! About The Author Kerr S. Networking: The Cost of a Connection

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By Luke Vorstermans “Networking is a waste of time,” said JoAnne, owner of a busy print shop. “Besides, I advertise in the daily paper.” “Wow, that must be expensive,” I exclaimed. “Are you getting results from that investment?” “I sure hope so! My advertising budget is about $475 a month but Ive never really tracked the results. I guess I should do that.” “You should.” I replied. “A small business cant afford to waste money on ineffective advertising. But back to your comment about networking: why do you think it’s a waste of time?” “I don’t know how to connect with people and make a lasting impression,” she replied. “Maybe I should give something so people will remember me.” “Not a bad idea. Its the best way to be remembered. Give potential clients something of value and it’s easier to make that follow up call.” “But how much value will make an impression?” she asked suspiciously. “Good question! But let me ask you this: How big of an impression do you want to make?” “Enough so I can follow up with a call and theyll remember who I am. Once Ive made the connection, the rest of the process is easy. Its making that first connection thats difficult.” “If you knew how many people came to your shop as a result of your advertisement, that would give you an idea of what youre now paying for a connection,” I suggested. “What do you mean?” she asked, her interest rising. “Well, advertising can be effective if you understand how it works. Most business owners dont, but spend their hard earned dollars advertising anyway. Its a well-worn business tradition. But lets say your $475 a month advertising brings you ten new connections a month. Youre basically paying $47.50 a connection or, we can call it a lead. How does that make you feel?” “$47.50 per lead? Thats outrageous! Especially since they may not even become a customer.” “Exactly. But if they do become a customer, $47.50 may not be out of line,” I replied. “But it gives you an idea of how much you are paying to get a lead. If you could be more accurate on placing that $47.50, you would have more control over the growth of your business.” “But how do I do that?” JoAnne asked glancing at her advertisement. “My point was to answer your question about how much value should you give to make a connection. First you have to decide how much a connection is worth. People will assess your sincerity on how much value you put into the connection. Its like a handshake. A firm engaging grip says one thing; a wimpy shake says another.” “So give me some examples of how to give something of value from a business that would have impact.” “Discounts for first time buyers are nice,” I said, “but everyone does the discount thing. Give something that stands out. A friend of mine gives a copy of his book, nicely packaged in a wooden case, to anyone he wants to do business with. Another business owner gives away CDs with a selection of Celtic music. Then theres the landscaper who brings rose bushes to every networking event he attends and gives them away for free. His cost? $12.95 per bush. He told me that his bush give-a-way was the most effective strategy in growing his business. If you were to do that with your $475 advertising budget, you could give away 36 rose bushes a month. Do you think that would be more rewarding than placing an advertisement? “You see, every business has to generate new leads. Telemarketing, cold calling, advertising are all shots in the dark an expensive way to find the specific customer youre looking for. But in a networking situation, you have control over the audience. First of all, youre only going to attend those events that serve your business needs. Second, youre there in personthe power of one-on-one communication. And third, by offering something of value, you are initiating the relationship. Its a powerful way to build a business.” “Wow! That puts networking into a whole new league,” JoAnne replied. “Yes, networking works if you put something of value into it … more than just a business card or a handshake. It’s a powerful tool once you know how to use it.” Luke Vorstermans owns and manages a successful publishing and communications company and is the Editor of Business Dynamics magazine and content contributor to IR Design. Child Support in Los Angeles

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Warren R. Shiell Child Support Overview In 1999, over $14 billion was owed to California’s children. 35% of single parent families had income below the poverty line. Statistics show that payment of child support reduces poverty and corresponds to greater involvement by the non-custodial parent in the children’s lives. Do I have to pay child support? Child Support must be paid by a non-custodial parent until the child marries, dies, is emancipated, turns 18 and is not a full time high school student, or turns 19 if they are a full time high school student, whichever occurs first. An adult child who is disabled and unable to earn a living has an ongoing right to support. How much child support should I pay or receive? In California, the courts use a complex mathematical formula to calculate child support that is based on a number of factors such as the gross income of each parent, the percentage of time each parent spends with each child, available tax deductions, child care costs, tax status of each parent and so on. This amount is often referred to as the “guideline” child support amount. Because of the complexity of calculating the “guideline” amount, the Court uses a software program called “Dissomaster.” Most attorneys use this program and will be able to perform child support calculations. The Dissomaster software can be found at www.cflr.com. Any child support order must specify the amount of child support and when it is to be paid. Couples often agree to monthly payments in two installments to coincide with the payor’s bi-weekly receipt of wages. Do the courts ever deviate from the standard formula for child support? The Court may depart from the “guideline” amount in a number of situations set forth in Family Code section 4057 (b). For example, the parent ordered to pay child support may have extraordinary high income and the guideline amount would exceed the needs of the children. Another example would be where the children have special medical or other needs that require an amount greater than the guideline. Can I get my spouse to pay extra for child care and training expenses? There are a number of additional expenses that the non-custodial parent may be required to pay in full or in part. Mandatory add-ons that the Court is required to order include child care costs related to a parent’s employment or training or education for employment and the reasonable uninsured health care costs for the children. Discretionary add-ons include costs related to educational or other special needs of the children and travel expenses for visitation. Generally, the Court will allocate add-ons equally between the parties. However, if the paying parent can prove that this would be unfair, Family Code section 4061(b) provides a procedure for the Court to allocate the payment of add-ons according to the net spendable income of each party. This most often comes into play where one party is also paying spousal support. Who pays for health insurance for the kids? Family Code section 3751 requires the Court, when making a child support order, to order either or both parents to maintain health insurance for the minor children if it is available at no cost or at a reasonable cost. How do I get child support order? Once a petition in a dissolution (divorce) has been filed a parent may request that the Court order temporary child support for children born during the marriage. Where the parents are not married, before the Court can order support, paternity must be established. Since January 1, 1995, all hospitals have been required to provide unmarried parents with the opportunity to voluntarily acknowledge paternity by signing a Voluntary Declaration of Paternity. If this is signed and not rescinded within 60 days it has the same effect as a paternity judgment and can provide the basis for custody, visitation or support. Even if it has not been challenged a motion for genetic testing may still be brought within two years of the child’s birth challenging the Voluntary Declaration of Paternity. Once I’ve gotten a child support order how do I enforce it? In California, every time the Court makes a child support Order it must issue a Wage Assignment Order that directs the payor’s employer to deduct the amount of child support from wages and pay it directly to the payee parent. The wage assignment can be stayed by written agreement of the parties. Can I get help from the County to collect child support? Parents can retain a private attorney to establish and collect support or employ the services of the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS). Unfortunately, Los Angeles County has one of the poorest child collection records in the state and fares poorly when compared to national statistics. What other action can I take to collect child support? If you are owed child support arrears you may request that Court hold the payor parent in contempt. If you can prove that non-payment was knowing and willful, the payor parent can be fined and even jailed. If you are owed child support arrears you may bring an Order To Show Cause requesting that the Court determine the amount of arrearages. You can also petition the Court for a Writ of Execution which can be used against bank accounts. Family Code section 4600 also allows the Court to order the payor parent to deposit up to one year’s child support payments in an interest bearing account as security. This can be used if there’s been a problem receiving child support in the past or if the payor is self employed. Can I modify a child support order if circumstances change? If you already have a judgment in your case you can find out if the payor’s income has changed by having them served with a Request for Production of an Income and Expense Declaration After Judgment (form FL-396) on the other parent, along with an Income and Expense Declaration (form FL-150) which are available from www.courtinfo.ca.gov/forms/ What are the tax consequences of paying or receiving child support? Child support is not taxable income to the parent who receives it and it cannot be deducted by the parent who pays it.
