Colds - Hot and Cold - Winter Health

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Susun Weed Preventing colds and the flu can be summed up in three words: Wash your hands. The viruses that cause colds and the flu most readily enter our bodies by means of our hands. Wash your hands after shopping. Remind your children to wash their hands as soon as they come home from school. A little “hysterical hygiene” goes a long way to keeping colds at bay. Of course, there are herbs that can be used to help thwart colds and the flu. Yarrow is a clear favorite, especially as a tincture. Teachers, moms, and wise children find a dose of 5-25 drops of yarrow tincture in the morning in some liquid reduces the likelihood of getting sick by more than half. Astragalus is gaining fame for its ability to support strong immune system functioning. I throw a few tongue-depressor-like pieces in my soups, where they infuse their goodness without imparting much flavor. Powdered astragalus can be added to almost anything, from oatmeal to pancakes, soups to gravies. And there is always the tincture, which works well in doses of 1-3 dropperfuls a day. (If at all possible, use domestic astragalus, rather than that from China.) Eleuthero, which used to be called Siberian ginseng, is another immune system nourisher, used in the same ways as astragalus: cooked into food or taken as a tincture. And don’t forget honey. A spoonful at the first sign of a sore throat or runny nose can kill the bacteria responsible and help you get better fast. (Note: Do not give honey to babies under 12 months old.) And if you do get sick, here’s my favorite way to get well fast. Treat a cold cold with heat. Treat a hot cold with cold. This may sound too easy, but it is actually one of the most effective ways I know of to minimize the severity and duration of a cold (or the flu). I first learned about cold colds and hot colds when I was studying Five Element Theory with a sweetheart who was attending acupuncture school. It is important to remember that “cold” and “hot” don’t refer to temperature; they refer to what we might call metabolism. Thus, the person with a cold cold could very well have a raging fever and the person with a hot cold may have no fever at all. Similarly, hot foods and herbs are not necessarily cooked, and cold foods and herbs need not be refrigerated. So how can we tell the difference between a cold cold and a hot cold? And what are cold herbs and hot herbs, cold foods and hot foods? The person with a cold cold (or a cold flu) is pale. Their bodily fluids are copious and without color: The nose runs with clear or white mucus; the bowels are loose and the feces are light in color; urination is profuse and colorless. The tongue may be coated with a white moss. If there is fever, it is accompanied by chills. The person with a cold cold seeks heat and hot foods. The person with a hot cold (or a hot flu) is ruddy; the face, or at least the cheeks, are very red. The eyes may feel dry and irritated. Their bodily fluids are scant and dark: nasal mucus is dry, yellowish, or “stopped up;” the bowels slow and feces are hard; urination is infrequent and highly colored. The tongue may be red or coated with a yellow moss. If there is a fever, it is “raging.” The person with a hot cold seeks coolness and has little appetite. When you have a cold cold, indulge your desire for heating foods and herbs: Drink lots of hot spicy herbal teas with honey*, such as ginger tea, cinnamon tea, or any of the spicy “Yogi Tea” type blends. Nourish yourself with chicken soup, beef broth, miso soup. Enjoy baked winter squash, baked potatoes, baked yams, baked garlic. Eat lots of olive oil, ghee, butter, olives, and avocados. Eat beans and eat the warming grains: kasha, rye, oats. Stay warm; take a hot bath or a hot shower and wrap up snugly before going to sleep. When you have a hot cold, indulge your desire for frozen fruit smoothies. Drink lemon and honey* water, iced nettle infusion, hibiscus and mint teas. Nourish yourself with seaweed salads, cucumber sandwiches, and fresh tomatoes with basil. Enjoy berries and melons, green salads, and roasted fowl. Eat the cooling grains: corn, millet, spelt. Eat a little something even if your appetite is small. Stay cool; take off your shoes and socks and put your bare feet on the ground. But keep covers handy when you go to sleep. You see, cold colds turn into hot colds and vice versa. They don’t stay the same the whole time you are sick. So be prepared to pull the covers up to your chattering teeth and flowing nose even if you went to bed stuffed up and sweltering. Or to throw off the pile of covers you clutched hours earlier. The real beauty of this idea of hot colds and cold colds is the premise that everything, even a cold, will change and so the cure comes not from knowing the right answer, but in following the flow of the sickness and offering appropriate treatments. I imagine a balance scale, swinging back and forth between hot and cold, with me gently damping the swings, making each one a little less severe, until single-pointed stillness - health - is regained. Whether dealing with a hot cold or a cold cold, you can eat as much of the neutral nourishing foods - rice, wheat, fish, honey*, and yogurt - as you wish. But, beware of taking vitamin C while harboring a cold or the flu; it is extremely cooling. I hope these tips for preventing and dealing with colds and the flu help you, and those you love, stay in glowing good health all winter long. Green Blessings. Church Financing Options

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Stephen Anderson Financing church construction is, for some churches, a very easy task while for others it is a source of never-ending frustration. We could expound on some of the factors that might place your church in one group or the other later, but lets instead review the three major methods of funding church construction, along with their benefits and drawbacks. The three major methods of funding (in part or in whole) church construction are conventional lending and bond offerings and capital stewardship campaigns. Of the first two, loans and bonds, each is available in a variety of flavors. While it is true that capital campaigns can be used as a funding source, they are more infrequently done as the sole funding source than loans or bonds. Capital stewardship campaigns are typically done in conjunction with a loan or bond. More on that later A conventional loan is one where you will go to a direct lender or broker and get a construction loan based on the future value of the facilities you are going to build, using your assets as collateral. In a conventional loan, you are essentially borrowing all the money from one lender. Construction loans usually can be easily converted into mortgages at the end of construction. Many lenders will allow you to do this without a separate closing at the time the loan converts. A bond is a (generally) public offering for many people to loan you money by purchasing bonds. Your church would deal with a bond company who specializes in putting together and promoting the offering and as they sell the bonds, the money becomes available to your church. For both conventional loans and bond offerings, the amount of money that you can borrow is going to be limited by your current income and cash flow. One of the common financial rules of thumbs is that the church can only afford to borrow (read will only be able to borrow) between 3 and 4 times their current earnings. If the total church income for the year is $150,000, your borrowing capacity is probably only $450,000 to a maximum $600,000. Other factors that can affect your borrowing capacity are cash flow and equity. Regardless of bond or loan, the lenders are going to need to be able to see how you will make the payment from your current cash flow. It is one thing to get a loan, it is quite another to retire it. With very rare exceptions, shame on the church that takes 20 years to retire a loan! Most churches should have a workable plan to retire their debt in 7 years. Interest is money that the church gives to the world to foster the worlds economy. That money should stay in the Kingdom to finance Kingdom work. This brings us to our third form of financing, Capital Stewardship. A capital stewardship campaign will typically raise between 1.5x and 3x your churchs current total income, over a 3-year campaign period. Over the past several decades, thousands of churches have executed professionally facilitated campaigns. The result is a large statistical universe from which we learn that the majority of these churches raise the 1.5 to 3 times their current income: an analysis that mirrors my own experience in working with churches. There are 3 ways that a capital campaign can help fund a building program. Some churches may desire to avoid debt and to save up for construction. Others may opt to augment their borrowing capacity with additional funds from a stewardship campaign. Lastly, many will choose the middle road of using a capital stewardship campaign to pay off their debt as quickly as possible. This third method is the most prevalent. A capital stewardship campaign should easily pay off or more of the churches construction debt in three years. My position is that if the church can retire half of their debt in three years, they should certainly be able to retire the remaining half over the next 4 years. I say this, as I believe that the church will grow numerically and financially over the period of paying off the debt, and it would certainly have the option of executing a 2nd capital campaign at the conclusion of the first. Hopefully the church will be considering its next expansion plans before the end of the 7 years, which is a very good reason for becoming debt free as quickly as possible. Easy Garden - Propagate Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) - 3 Easy Ways

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By D. Perse This perennial is easy to grow in full sun and well drained, light soil. Three ways to propagate rosemary are: from seeds, from cuttings and by layering. 1. From seeds: germination of the rosemary seeds is extremely slow and so is the growing of the tiny seedlings. Thats why this is the least favorite of the three choices. Although, if you have patience and want to try and grow your own seedlings or test different species of Rosmarinus, go ahead and give it a try. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the package. 2. From stem cuttings: cut the soft wood at the tip of the branch (2 to 6 inches long). Remember that shorter cuttings mean more compact plants. There are two more basic rules that should not be ignored: use a clean, sharp knife to cut and the mildest strength hormone rooting powder for softwood cuttings (if any). The material for rooting should be sterile (perlite, washed sand, powdered styrofoam, vermiculite, or a mixture of any of those in equal proportions). Do not pack the material tightly around the stems to prevent damaging during removal of the rooted cuttings. Before planting the cuttings, strip at least half of the leaves from the stem. Insert into a rooting material about half stem deep, angled at about 45 degrees. 3. Simple layering: is the simplest way of propagation with rosemary. It almost never fails. Simply choose the branch that will bend easily to touch the ground. Dig a small hole and press the branch in it. Fill the depression with soil and firm well. To keep the branch in place and preventing the new roots from being lifted out of the ground put the rock or a brick over the buried branch spot. Water well. Six to eight weeks later your new plant should have enough roots for the attachment to the parent plant to be cut. Young rosemary is now ready to be transplanted to a new spot. In a warm, sunny climate your rosemary will grow fast and year round. You will have plenty for flavor in the kitchen as well as to put it in the vase and have that naturally fresh and clean smell in your home. D. Are You Hooked On Online Dating?

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Jason King Do you get in from work and check your inbox to see if you have another admirer? If you do, you could be hooked on online dating. You crave the attention of another single, but deep down you dont really want to settle down. While you are dating someone offline, are you still checking your inbox when you get home? Are you always on the lookout for someone you feel will be better? These are classic signs of someone who is hooked on online dating. Have you received a wink off of another single then cancelled an already arranged date? This is generally done by singles that are active with more than one person at a time while dating online. They arrange a date with one single, but deep down they want to go out with the other single. Then they go out on the date and realize it may have been a mistake, and hope the other single is still interested. Finding a fault with everyone is another sign of addiction. Always looking for someone to be perfect, but that will never happen, you dont want it to. Remember, youre addicted, and the next person you date will always be better. You can go back to your inbox, and see who is contacting you. The enjoyment of going to a restaurant with someone different is a turn on for you. That continual initial attraction is far more appealing than a long term relationship ever will be. Its lust that youre after, and not love. Splitting up comes easy to an online dating addict. Reconciliations are not even mentioned. What ever the reason was for splitting up, they will be forgotten once back online, and looking for more fish in the sea. Seeing a relationship through takes character and strength. Any challenges should be talked about, and not just used as an excuse to split up, and move on. These obstacles will build the relationship so it grows and becomes stronger. The reason for starting online dating is to meet someone. Someone you can commit too. Not every relationship is going to work out, wanting it too will give it a much better chance of survival. 4 Proven Ways to Date Hot Women

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Scott Patterson Alright manwe’ve all had that fantasy. You see a beautiful woman across the bar surrounded other guys. In your head you wonder what it would be like to be with her and date her. Probably you can secretly imagine yourself what it would be like to have sex with her. Well I’ve had this fantasy. And I am pretty sure have as well. But there is a harsh reality this fantasy- it’s pretty hard to land a hot girl. Furthermore it’s even harder to keep hold of her. Fortunately there are a few ways you can become the guy who has the hot girl at his side. Tip #1- Exude confidence Without a doubt, confidence is an absolute must for attracting and dating a hot woman. In every situation, you MUST exude confidence around her. Even if you don’t feel comfortable in certain places, you must be able to at least fake a bit of confidence. If you’re one of those types of guys who doesn’t feel particularly confident, you must practice building this trait. There are a lot of books and audio CDs which can help you build confidence. So go grab a copy and train yourself to be confident. Tip #2- Improve Yourself In addition to working on your confidence, you have to improve yourself to the point to where you stand out from other guys. The one thing that sets men who date hot women apart from other dudes is the fact that they have their own unique style. Whether it’s the way they dress or their attitude, these guys are a cut above the rest. To improve yourself, you have to do a bit of self-exploration and find out what makes you unique. Then work hard to create this image for yourself. Tip #3- Be Masculine When you date a hot woman, you are with the epitome of femininity. Now in order to be with her, you have to be the exact opposite of her. In other words, you have to masculine! Now when I say masculine, I don’t mean you have to be some 6 and 1/2 foot tall monstrosity. Instead you should you should display all the qualities that women love in guys. This means you should be confident, aggressive, candid, funny and a bit cocky. The more you can do display the classic signs of “being a guy”, the more she’ll be into you. Tip #4- You Must Have a Large Social Circle Hot women like to be with guys they consider to be “movers and shakers”. These are the guys who seem to know everybody in the room and get a lot of attention. To cultivate this personality, you have to be willing to get out there and make friends. In other words, you have to work on attracting both guys and girls to your social circle. By having a lot of friends, you’ll increase your social value to women and will create a competitive environment among them. Now remember all of these four tips are within your reach. While this might take a bit of hard work, the pay off is well worth it. If you can step and work on these skills, you’ll become the guy with the hot woman on his arm. Are you ready for this challenge? Take the challenge! Grab Scott Patterson’s free ebook: Seduction SecretsRevealed!, and learn a step-by-step system for dating hot women. Skip the Marketing Jargon to Attract More Paying Clients

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Fabienne Fredrickson Many people get tempted to use the fancy phrases that they use on a regular basis, in their marketing materials. Problem is they end up speaking above their prospects heads. I see this use of jargon all too often when visiting peoples websites and in networking groups. My impression is theres a lack of confidence in there somewhere and people are trying to compensate by trying to sound overly professional or fancy. Well, the result is that not only are peoples eyes glazing over, theyre also probably losing lots of potential clients that way, and not to mention, lots of potential referrals. Only people in your industry know what you mean when you use fancy words that are meant to exclude, rather than include. A potential client is not always part of YOUR industry and as such, they wont really understand all the technical stuff. Besides, they dont care WHAT you do, remember? They only care about what you can do for THEM. So, skip the jargon, will you? Its time to pretend that your audience and referral partners are 6-year olds, and not as an insult, but rather, as a way to have what you say be: memorable easy to understand repeatable Thats why I dont talk about fancy marketing plans or closing-the-sale scripts in my own marketing materials. All I basically talk about is, More Clients, In Record Time and Consistently. Client example: A couple of years ago, a client came to me saying he was having a difficult time getting additional clients, mostly, getting attention from his prospects long enough to turn them into paying clients. Once I heard his marketing message, I understood EXACTLY what the problem was and it came down to just one word: fiduciary. Now, I dont know about you, but when I first met him, I didnt really use that word frequently (to tell you the real honest truth, I didnt know what it meant) and I suspected his prospects didnt either. Instead of talking on the prospects level, this client was speaking in nothing but jargon and he realized it was becoming a big turnoff. Basically, business was literally slipping through his fingers because of it. Once I explained to him what was going on, he switched his marketing message from providing complicated fiduciary and 401K services to taking the financial piles of paper off the desks of HR people, and guess what? Yup, he has more business than he can handle now. (I love this client. He totally GOT it, once I pointed it out. Whenever I see him, we now laugh about fiduciary.) Your Assignment: Make sure you phrase your marketing message and claim in everyday terms, preferably results. Practice on a 6-year old child, if you can. Tell the child your marketing message and ask them to tell you what you do. Believe me; kids are smarter than most adults are on this stuff, so if they cant repeat it, your prospects and referral sources probably wont know what you do either. It all comes down to K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, sweetheart!). 2006 Client Attraction LLC. All Rights Reserved. A Creative RIOT

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Harry Hoover Relevant, original and impactful: thats what my friend Creative Director Jim Mountjoy says that effective creative must be. With apologies to Jim, I have my own acronym because I think ROI is only 75 percent of the way there. Effective creative is a RIOT: relevant, impactful, original and true. Lets say you are a personal injury attorney who represents the people. Do you think that a blue collar worker cares if you have protected North Carolinians since 1975, or would a message like fighting the system for you resonate more? The first is chest-thumping, the second is more relevant. A campaign we once did for Verbatim data storage products is a great impactful example. Everyone else in the industry was doing technical feature ads, but consumers told us they didnt care how the products were made, they wanted to know their data was safe. We took that relevant message and brought it to life. A comet streaks toward earth and a cartoon bubble from the planet says, We may not live but at least the data will survive. Verbatim. Your best defense against data loss. Sales leads increased by more than 300 percent. Impactful? I think so. Original is hard. How many times have you seen lame creative that steals from the successful Got Milk? creative? That doesnt mean you cant use things from popular culture in an original way. In a branding campaign I worked on for First Federal of Charleston, we took the Hal computer imagery from the movie 2001, turned it into an ATM, and let it be a surrogate for the big, impersonal banks. Truth, however, is the most important element. What if you had an ad that said: Remember when a small business had access to the bank president; when you could talk with a loan officer who understood your business and when the bank would actually send a courier to pick up your deposit? No? We dont either thats why… Now, would you believe that ad from Bank of America? I dont think so. But from my client, the start-up Bank of Commerce, it is true and believable. There you have it. Now, whats keeping you from starting a creative RIOT? Harry Hoover is a partner in My Creative Team. A Few Tips About Comic Book Backing Boards

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Donald Rohde Comic Book Backing Boards come in different thicknesses and acid-free properties. The basic purpose for using a backing board is to give the comic some stiffness, which helps keep the comic pages from bending, creasing or wrinkling. When a backing is placed in the center of the comic it protects the comic book spine from crushing. The second purpose for using a backing board in a comic is its potential to neutralize acid in the comic book paper. Acid in the paper that the comic is printed can cause the deterioration of the comic. Using an acid-free backing in your comic can potentially trap and neautralize acid in the paper. The three types of comic backing boards we offer are: Economy comic book backings, Standard acid-free comic book backings and Archival comic backings. The economy comic backing should be used for short-term storage and stiffening purposes only. It does contain acid and can contribute to the breakdown of the comic. People generally use this board for quick sale items. The standard acid-free comic backing material is acid-free and can be used for long-term storage (over 100 years). The archival comic backing material is acid-free and buffered with calcium carbonate, which means that it will remain archival for 100’s of years. Our comic backing boards are sized to properly fit into our comic bags.
